The way you present yourself in an interview plays a big role in determining if you will get the job or not, and your dressing is a big part of that presentation. If you are new to this, you may not know what kind of dress would be appropriate for an interview. This article shall help you out how to dress for an interview.

How to Dress for an Interview?

There are two types of interviews:

  • Casual Interviews: these interviews are mainly for societies and other things like community service. Usually they are not related to earning.
  • Formal interviews: these interviews are mainly for a corporate job, when you have to be a company’s representative.

They each require a slightly different attire that will be mentioned below. Let’s find out how to dress for an interview for both types.

Men’s interview attire

Formal Interviews

For a formal corporate interview, men may require following to dress for an interview:

  • A dark suit.
  • Light shirt that matches the suit.
  • Tie
  • Leather belt and shoes
  • A clean and professional hairstyle

Casual Interviews

You may not need to be as conservative for casual interviews, but that does not mean you can come in jeans. Wear normal clothes, preferably dress pants without a coat. You also do not need to focus a lot on color combinations.

Women’s interview attire

Formal Interviews

For a formal corporate interview, women may require:

  • A suit skirt that at least reaches knees.
  • Very limited jewelry
  • Light makeup and neat hairstyle
  • Formal shoes (preferably with heels)

Casual interviews

As in the case of men, although you may have flexibility in casual interviews, this does not mean you can go overboard. Wear normal clothes, but look prepared enough for an interview.

Final Thoughts

This is just a basic paradigm for interview dressing. Some people may prefer the gender-neutral look. So, it is just important to follow the basic guidelines and seem presentable enough.
